Response to History of Geophysics Survey, 1997.

Response to a survey of approximately 250 leading geophysicists worldwide, conducted by the American Institute of Physics (AIP) Center for History of Physics and the Committee on History of Geophysics of the American Geophysical Union in 1997. Recipients were asked to send copies of their curriculum vitae and a list of publications as Part One of the survey and were then asked to discuss their entry into science in general and geophysics specifically as a career; how their scientific achievements came about and major efforts they were involved in which did not achieve the hoped for results; changes from one discipline to another; funding sources; the role of other disciplines in their own research; their work as educators; and their involvement in geophysics-related institutions. Bryson answers questions in Part Two at length, detailing his scientific achievements, his scientific work environment, and relationships to other geophysics-related institutions. Achievements include predicting the discovery of the "Jet Stream" in 1944; identification of the Arizona monsoon; spectrum analysis of tree rings; new theories of airstreams; the effect of polar wandering on the atmosphere, and development of a computer model of past climates he calls "archaeoclimatology". Also includes an unfinished manuscript entitled "The Flute in the Canyon"; a curriculum vitae and publications bibliography; a list of papers in progress. Other autobiographical writings include remembrances of his teaching experiences and various faculty at the University of Wisconsin; wartime experiences; and reminiscences of his doctoral years at the University of Chicago with advisors Carl-Gustaf Rossby and Erwin Biel.
